Oral English for Professional Communication
Description
This subject proposes the enhancement of the linguistic approach from English rhetoric. It is divided into six thematic blocks. The course is divided into six thematics blocks:
Block I – Rhethoric and composition
‣ The programme emphasizes connections between theory and speech, positioning our graduate students
in the ongoing discussion and debate of praxis. As we examine and discuss various theoretical
perspectives, we do so in the light of teaching concerns and in relation to who our students are and what
their needs might be.
Block II – The art of persuasion through speech
‣ Rhetoric is the art of speaking well and convincing other people. Rhetoric is a skill that can be trained and
taught. The rhetoric represents correctly the art of speaking well. It is the art or the technique of
persuasion, usually through the usage of the word. The rhetoric, the dialectic and the grammar form the
trivium which forms the quadrivium, the seven liberal arts of the Western culture. During the antiquity
and the Middle Ages, the rhetoric was directed towards the persuasion in the public and political
conditions, also towards the gatherings and the courts of justice.
Block III – Rhetoric and speech
‣ Plato and Aristotle on rhetoric
‣ Models of rhetoric in the history of English literature
‣ Models of rhetoric in the history of English language
Block IV – Rhetoric literary: some political speeches
‣ Study and analysis of twenty famous speeches delivered by some of the most decisive leaders of the
English-speaking world's politics
Block V – Movie speeches
‣ The rhetoric and speech from some movies is designed to familiarize students with human
communication. This focus prepares the students for a variety of stages, including education, graduate
school, law, government and social and human services.
