Profile

José R. Ibáñez earned a licenciatura in English Philology at the University of Murcia. In 1999, he received his Ph.D. in Modern Languages at Wayne State University, one of Michigan's largest academic institutions. His teaching career began in 1993 in the Department of Romance Languages at Wayne State University, where he worked as a Teaching Assistant and an Adjunt Faculty from 1993 to 1998. Since 2002, he has been teaching  language and literature courses in the Department of Philology at the University of Almería.

   His research is focused on American Literature, and he has a particular interest in Edgar Allan Poe, twentieth- century American hyphenated authors (e.g. Ha Jin, Jhumpa Lahiri), Jewish American short fiction, and Southern Literature. He currently serves on the editorial board of The Edgar Allan Poe Review and and as  Vice President of the Edgar Allan Poe Spanish Association (EAPSA). In April 2021, he was appointed as Treasurer of the Spanish Association for American Studies (SAAS). In February 2020, he organized the 2nd International Conference of the Edgar Allan Poe Spanish Association at the University of Almería. Together with Santiago Rodríguez Guerrero-Strachan, he is preparing the edition of a volume on Edgar Allan Poe.
