About Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park

The Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park is Andalusia's largest coastal protected area, covering over 45,000 hectares of land and sea. It is a unique landscape of volcanic origin with stunning geological features, pristine beaches, and rich biodiversity.

Key features of the park include:

  • Volcanic Landscape: The only volcanic region in southeastern Spain, with impressive geological formations dating back millions of years
  • Marine Reserve: One of the most important marine reserves in the Mediterranean, home to extensive Posidonia oceanica meadows and diverse marine life
  • Pristine Beaches: Over 50 km of coastline with some of Spain's most unspoiled beaches
  • Rich Biodiversity: Home to numerous endemic plant species and an important stopover for migratory birds
  • Cultural Heritage: Historic watchtowers, traditional fishing villages, and ancient mining sites

The park's semi-arid climate makes it one of the driest regions in Europe, creating a unique ecosystem that resembles North African landscapes more than typical European ones.
