About Me

I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Philology at the University of Almeria. Since 2002, I have taught a wide array of subjects, spanning from English language to English and American literature, as well as American culture and society.
After graduating in English Philology at the University of Murcia in 1991, I moved to the United States to join the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at Wayne State University, the largest urban university in Detroit, Michigan. During my six years there, I gained valuable experience as a Teaching Assistant and Adjunct Faculty Fellow before earning my Ph.D in Modern Languages in 1999.
In 2002, I joined the Department of English and German Philology—currently the Department of Philology—at the University of Almeria, where I have taught ever since. My research has focused extensively on nineteenth and twentieth-century American short fiction, with a special interest in Edgar Allan Poe and the works of twentieth- century hyphenated American writers, primarily Jhumpa Lahiri, Ha Jin, and Nathan Englander.
I recently co-edited Retrospective Poe. The Master, His Readership, His Legacy (Palgrave Macmillan, 2023) with Santiago Rodríguez Guerrero-Strachan (University of Valladolid). Currently, we are collaborating again on the forthcoming Handbook of the Short Story in the World, scheduled for publication by Brill in 2026. I am also a founding member of the research group HUM-807 Lindisfarne, 'Literature and Culture of the English Speaking Countries.'
Regarding academic services, I served as Secretary of the Department of Philology from 2017 to 2021, and I am currently the Coordinator of the English Studies Division.
I am also deeply involved in the broader academic community. Since 2021, I have served as Treasurer of the Spanish Association for American Studies (SAAS). Additionally, I am a founding member and current Secretary of the Edgar Allan Poe Spanish Association (EAPSA), and I have sat on the Editorial Board of The Edgar Allan Poe Review since July 2019.
In February 2020, I had the privilege of organizing the 2nd International EAPSA Conference at the University of Almería—a memorable event held just weeks before the global lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Beyond academia, I consider myself a global citizen who enjoys traveling across Spain and abroad, always driven by a curiosity for different cultures, traditions, and languages. I am fond of exploring European countries, visiting museums and art galleries, and—of course—discovering new and exotic culinary traditions.
