Nitrate leaching
and drainage were measured in commercial greenhouses, in 13 with crops
in soil and 10 with crops in substrate. The distribution of crops
reflected the relative cropping areas. In soil-grown crops, drainage
was measured by soil water balances made every 1-2 weeks. The NO3-
concentration in drainage was determined by the use of soil solution
suction samplers beneath the root zone. In substrate-grown crops,
growers measured the drainage volume, and NO3- concentration was
determined in the drainage samples.
