N uptake concentration was demonstrated to be a useful approach to N management of free-draining substrate-grown crops. Normally, these crops are associated with large nitrate losses. By maintaining applied N concentration at less than the N uptake concentration in a tomato crop grown in substrate, 82% of applied N was recovered in the crop. See Thompson et al (2013).
