Development of prescriptive-corrective management for both N and irrigation

To substantially reduce nitrate leaching, improvement of both N and irrigation management are required. Combined prescriptive and corrective management approaches are being developed for both N and irrigation management.  Prescriptive management refers to the development of optimal, customised plans for each individual crop, and corrective management refers to the use of monitoring systems that provide information for subsequent adjustments.

Mathematical models or decision support systems are used for preparing plans, and monitoring approaches are being used for the corrective component. Initial work with prescriptive-corrective management of both N and irrigation demonstrated substantial reductions in NO3- leaching and drainage, and in the amounts of N fertilizer and irrigation applied (Granados et al., 2013). Various models and monitoring approaches are being developed, which are described subsequently.
