• Name of the standard: “Generic Coding of Moving Pictures and Associated Audio”.
• Created in 1994 and massively used in DVDs (Digital Versatile Disc), satellite TV and DVB-T (Digital Video Broadcasting Terrestrial).
• Multichannel audio.
• Interlaced and progressive images.
• Like MPEG-1, based on hybrid coding.
• Compatible with MPEG-1.

1 MPEG-2 versus MPEG-1

• Higher bit-rates: between 4 Mbps and 30 Mbps.
• Higher spatial resolutions: up to 1920x1080 (HDTV).
• Enhanced error resilience (Satellite and DVB).
• Spatial and quality scalability.
