          General Information

Scope

8IWSMRR is planned to cover with oral and poster sessions all aspects on Seismic hazard assessment in urban areas, specially those related to Site effects and site response, Seismic microzoning, Earthquake scenarios, and on the other hand, with Seismic risk and Earthquake disaster reduction: particularly those related to Earthquake damage scenarios, Seismic risk management and Earthquake emergency planning.

Earthquake History of Almeria city

Almeria city is located in the eastern part of the Betics region (Southern Spain). This region presents a low-to-moderate seismic activity (in a world context), associated with the continent-continent collision between Africa and Eurasia plates and it is acknowledged to be the most seismically active zone in Spain according to historical and instrumental seismic data, being considered the most hazardous Spanish seismic zone by the Spanish Building Code (NCSE,2002)

According to historical sources, during the last six centuries, at least four damaging earthquakes have occurred near Almeria city: the 1357, 1522, 1658 and 1804 events, all with intensity I >= VIII (EMS scale). The more relevant of them is the September 22nd, 1522 Almeria earthquake (I = IX). This quake devastated almost all the buildings of Almeria city although their constructions were established on hard rock. The cathedral (former main mosque), monasteries and churches were nearly totally destroyed, the greater part of the walls and towers of the city-walls felt down and the seaport was also ruined. The towers and walls of the fortress suffered heavy damage included their stronger parts although had been reinforced several years before. It is said 2500 people died in Almeria, but it is not clear if it is the total number of people died in the earthquake or only those corresponding to the city.

Furthermore, historical detailed documents inform that more than 80 towns, villages and farmhouses of Granada and Almeria provinces were also devastated, mainly those placed in the Alpujarras and Andarax river zones. The quake was felt in an extensive area at the north of Algeria and Morocco. Documents also speak about the occurrence of a tsunami affecting Almeria coast (mainly the city), Oran (Algeria) and Moroccan coast, probably because the epicentre was in Almeria Gulf, in the submarine part of the Carboneras fault.
